This SRF broadcast follows the diplomatic fallout following the 9th of February 2014 “Mass Immigration Initiative” referendum. With the vote narrowly passing in favour of quotas on EU immigration, enormous controversy arose given the implications of that vote for the free movement of persons as agreed upon in Switzerland’s bilateral treaties with the EU. As a former Swiss Ambassador to Germany, Dr. Thomas Borer is interviewed concerning the diplomatic efforts underway to ease the tensions and secure a new agreement. He praises efforts to encourage calm and minimise outrage, while still imploring the EU to understand the difficult situation that the Swiss are in.
