TeleZ Konkret – BREXIT and the Future of the EU in an Unsatisfied Europe
Claudia Steinmann, host of Konkret, is joined by Dr. Thomas Borer in the immediate aftermath of BREXIT to discuss its implications and the future of Europe both within and outside of the EU. Borer characterises the EU as a fundamentally elitist project and emphasises that it would be a mistake to make an example of the U.K. given the recent rise of euroscepticism more broadly in the European Parliament. Instead, he suggests a more tiered geopolitical structure for Europe, where peripheral countries like Switzerland and the U.K. can participate in the EU’s free trade without having to make collective decisions about defence and immigration. The core issue, Borer clarifies, is that “this unwavering unity no longer works for many people in the EU”, making it necessary for the EU to adapt.
