SF 10vor10 – Transparency After the Swiss-German Tax Deal Collapse
In this 2012 SF broadcast following the collapse of the Swiss-German tax agreement, former Swiss ambassador to Germany Dr. Thomas Borer appears alongside Swiss President Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf to discuss the fallout. With Germany’s Bundesrat rejecting the deal to anonymously tax undeclared German assets in Swiss banks, Borer encourages Switzerland to recognise that some level of transparency in line with the emerging global standards is unavoidable, and that its international reputation and credibility will be severely compromised if it fails to get with the times. President Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf disagrees with this assessment, highlighting that other EU Member States might still be able to be convinced to support Swiss banking secrecy.
